Elizabeth Eckford was born on October 4, 1941 and is currently still alive. When she became the lone member of the Little Rock Nine to attend Central High School on September 4, 1957 she was only 15 years old. Elizabeth arrived alone because her family lacked a telephone and the school board could not reach her in time to alert her of the change of meeting place. Because she had arrived at the school alone she was forced to withstand the brutality of the crowd and other students without protection. Elizabeth would finish the school year at Central High School but would not graduate due to the closing of all public schools. She had taken enough classes to continue her education and go to college even without graduating. (Elizabeth Ann Eckford).
Elizabeth Eckford would go on to serve five years in the military. She would eventually become an information specialist for the US Army. Elizabeth Eckford would then work many jobs throughout her career but currently she is working as a probation officer in Little Rock. Elizabeth would be awarded many awards for her bravery as one of the members of the Little Rock Nine. She was awarded the Spingarn Medal, Father Joseph Blitz Award, and the Congressional Gold Medal. (Elizabeth Ann Eckford). THAT'S COOL!
